Abolishing Sophistication

Looking for the inherent simplicity

We find sophistication in three fundamental management errors:

  1. Forcing certainty on uncertainty by excessive accuracy
  2. Forcing compromises on conflicts by excessive optimization
  3. Forcing simplicity on complexity by excessive specialization

We tend to believe that in order to achieve a breakthrough in business, we need a sophisticated solution. In reality, only seldom are breakthroughs based on a sophisticated approach. Sophisticated solutions carry the promise of certainty. We tend to assume that whoever came up with the sophisticated solution knows what they are doing and thus will deliver. Experience, however, doesn’t support this assumption.
